What is HDR?
High Dynamic Range (HDR) is a display and imaging technology that increases the contrast ratio between the brightest whites and deepest blacks while expanding the color gamut, producing significantly more lifelike and vivid visuals than Standard Dynamic Range (SDR).
HDR exists to bridge the gap between how human eyes perceive real-world light and how screens render it. By increasing peak brightness (measured in nits) and enabling wider color spaces like DCI-P3, HDR allows displays to show finer details in dark shadows and bright highlights simultaneously. It is widely used in TVs, PC monitors, smartphones, gaming consoles, digital cameras, and video streaming platforms.
Key Takeaways
Broader Dynamic Range: Enhances contrast by making dark areas darker and bright areas brighter without losing detail.
Wider Color Palette: Uses Wide Color Gamut (WCG) to display billions of colors instead of millions.
Higher Peak Brightness: Requires displays capable of high luminance to highlight fine details like sunlight or explosions.
Ecosystem Required: Demands HDR-encoded content, a compatible display, and a supported playback device or software.
History & Evolution
Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) was built around the limitations of old Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors, restricted to 8-bit color depth (16.7 million colors) and low peak brightness (~100 nits). As display tech evolved to OLED and mini-LED, screens gained the hardware capability to output thousands of nits and deeper black levels. In the mid-2010s, industry standards like HDR10 and Dolby Vision were introduced to utilize these hardware advancements, establishing modern HDR video and gaming standards.
How HDR Works
HDR works through two core elements: expanded hardware capabilities and specialized metadata.
Wide Color Gamut & Bit Depth: HDR utilizes 10-bit or 12-bit color depth, expanding color range from 16.7 million (SDR) to over 1 billion or 68 billion colors.
Electro-Optical Transfer Function (EOTF): Replaces legacy gamma curves with perceptual quantizer (PQ) or Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) curves, instructing the display exactly how bright each pixel should be.
Metadata: Digital information sent along with the video signal tells the screen how to map brightness and colors frame-by-frame or scene-by-scene.
Types of HDR Formats
HDR10: The open-standard baseline for HDR. Uses static metadata, meaning brightness levels are set for the entire video.
HDR10+: An open dynamic format developed by Samsung and Panasonic. Adjusts brightness and contrast scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame.
Dolby Vision: A proprietary dynamic format by Dolby supporting up to 12-bit color depth and 10,000 nits peak brightness for precision visual fidelity.
HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma): Designed for live broadcasting. Combines SDR and HDR signals into a single stream for backward compatibility with older TVs.
DisplayHDR: VESA's performance certification tiers for PC monitors (e.g., DisplayHDR 400, 600, 1000, True Black), indicating verified hardware capabilities.
Advantages of HDR
Realistic Visuals: Simulates real-world lighting conditions far better than SDR.
Improved Color Accuracy: Displays nuanced shades and gradients without color banding.
Enhanced Shadow & Highlight Detail: Dark scenes reveal hidden textures, while light sources pop without clipping.
Limitations of HDR
Hardware Dependent: Low-end displays claiming "HDR Support" often lack the brightness or local dimming needed for a true HDR experience.
Format Fragmentation: Competing standards (Dolby Vision vs. HDR10+) require compatible hardware across the entire media chain.
Higher Power Consumption: High peak brightness and advanced backlighting demand more energy.

| Color Gamut | sRGB / Rec.709 | DCI-P3 / Rec.2020 |
| Peak Brightness | ~100–250 nits | 400 to 10,000+ nits |
| Black Levels | Standard | Ultra-Deep / True Black (OLED) |
| Metadata | None | Static (HDR10) or Dynamic (Dolby Vision) |
