What is Active PFC?
Active PFC (Active Power Factor Correction) is an electronic circuit used in modern power supplies to improve power efficiency by making the input current closely match the AC voltage waveform. It reduces wasted electrical power, improves power factor, lowers harmonic distortion, and helps power supplies comply with international energy standards.
Active PFC is commonly found in desktop PC power supplies (PSUs), servers, gaming systems, workstations, networking equipment, and many other electronic devices that use switched-mode power supplies (SMPS).
Key Takeaways
- Improves the power factor, often to 0.95–0.99.
- Reduces harmonic distortion on the electrical grid.
- Increases overall power efficiency.
- Supports wide input voltage ranges, typically 100–240V AC.
- Common in modern 80 PLUS certified PC power supplies.
- Uses electronic switching instead of large passive components.
Why Does Active PFC Exist?
Electronic power supplies naturally draw current in short pulses rather than smoothly from the AC line. This creates:
- Poor power factor
- Higher harmonic distortion
- Increased stress on electrical infrastructure
- Reduced energy efficiency
Active PFC was developed to shape the input current so it follows the incoming AC voltage more closely. This improves electrical efficiency and helps manufacturers meet regulations such as IEC 61000-3-2 for harmonic emissions.
How Does Active PFC Work?
An Active PFC circuit sits between the AC input and the main power conversion stage of a switched-mode power supply.
The process typically works as follows:
- AC power enters the PSU.
- The Active PFC controller continuously monitors voltage and current.
- A high-frequency switching converter regulates the input current.
- The current waveform is reshaped to closely follow the AC voltage waveform.
- The corrected power is delivered to the main DC conversion stage.
Because the current becomes smoother and more synchronized with the voltage, less energy is wasted, and the power factor improves significantly.

Common Misconceptions
Does Active PFC reduce your electricity bill?
Not directly. Active PFC mainly improves how efficiently a power supply draws power from the electrical grid rather than significantly reducing household energy consumption.
Does Active PFC increase PSU performance?
No. It improves input power quality and efficiency but does not increase the PSU's maximum output capacity or make computer components faster.
Is Active PFC the same as an 80 PLUS certification?
No. Active PFC and 80 PLUS measure different aspects. Active PFC improves power factor, while 80 PLUS certifies conversion efficiency. Many quality PSUs include both.
