What is 8-Pin PCIe Connector?
An 8-Pin PCIe Connector is a dedicated power connector supplied by a computer's power supply unit (PSU) to deliver additional electrical power to high-performance graphics cards and other PCIe expansion devices. It exists because the PCI Express motherboard slot alone cannot provide enough power for modern GPUs, ensuring stable performance, reliability, and safe power delivery during demanding workloads.
Key Takeaways
- Supplies up to 150 watts of additional power.
- Primarily powers dedicated graphics cards (GPUs).
- Uses 8 pins (6+2 design on most PSUs).
- Works alongside the PCIe motherboard slot, which provides up to 75W.
- Common in gaming PCs, workstations, and AI systems.
Why Does the 8-Pin PCIe Connector Exist?
Modern graphics cards consume significantly more power than the PCIe slot can safely provide. While the motherboard slot delivers up to 75W, many GPUs require 225W, 300W, or more.
The 8-Pin PCIe Connector was introduced to:
- Deliver additional electrical power safely
- Support increasingly powerful GPUs
- Improve power stability under heavy load
- Reduce stress on the motherboard's PCIe slot
How Does the 8-Pin PCIe Connector Work?
The connector carries 12V DC power directly from the PSU to the graphics card.
A typical GPU receives power from two sources:
- PCIe x16 motherboard slot: up to 75W
- 8-Pin PCIe Connector: up to 150W
For example:
- PCIe slot (75W) + one 8-pin connector (150W) = 225W available
- PCIe slot + two 8-pin connectors = 375W available
The GPU automatically draws power from both sources as needed.
Key Characteristics
- 8-pin power connector
- Designed specifically for PCI Express devices
- Delivers up to 150W
- Carries 12V power
- Often built as a 6+2-pin connector for flexibility
- Uses locking clips to prevent accidental disconnection

What Is the Difference Between an 8-Pin PCIe and an 8-Pin CPU Connector?
Although both have eight pins, they are not interchangeable.
The PCIe connector powers graphics cards, while the EPS/CPU connector powers the motherboard's CPU voltage regulators. Their pin layouts and wiring differ, and forcing the wrong connector can damage hardware.
Advantages
- Provides stable power for demanding GPUs
- Supports high-performance gaming and professional workloads
- Reduces power load on the motherboard
- Widely supported by modern power supplies
- Flexible 6+2-pin design improves compatibility
Limitations
- Limited to 150W per connector
- Not compatible with CPU/EPS power connectors
- Some high-end GPUs require multiple connectors
- Older power supplies may not include enough PCIe connectors
Common Misconceptions
- "An 8-pin connector always supplies exactly 150W."
No. It can deliver up to 150W, but the GPU only draws the power it requires. - "CPU and PCIe 8-pin connectors are identical."
No. They use different wiring and are not interchangeable. - "Every graphics card needs one."
No. Many entry-level GPUs operate solely from motherboard slot power.
Real-World Examples
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 uses one or more 8-pin PCIe connectors depending on the manufacturer.
- AMD Radeon RX 6800 commonly requires two 8-pin PCIe connectors.
- Professional workstation GPUs often use one or multiple 8-pin connectors for stable power delivery.
