What is a 4+4 Pin CPU Connector?
A 4+4 Pin CPU Connector is a motherboard power cable that delivers dedicated 12V power from the power supply (PSU) to the CPU. It consists of two detachable 4-pin sections that can be used together as an 8-pin CPU power connector or separately on motherboards requiring only a 4-pin connection.
Key Takeaways
- Supplies dedicated power to the processor.
- Splits into two 4-pin connectors for wider motherboard compatibility.
- Commonly labeled CPU, EPS, or ATX12V on power supplies.
- Supports both older 4-pin and modern 8-pin CPU power sockets.
- Different from an 8-pin PCIe GPU power connector, despite having a similar appearance.
Why Does the 4+4 Pin CPU Connector Exist?
As processors became more powerful, they required more stable and higher-current power delivery than the main 24-pin motherboard connector could provide.
The 4+4 pin design was introduced to:
- Support both legacy and modern motherboards with one cable.
- Simplify PSU compatibility across multiple platforms.
- Deliver cleaner, more reliable power to the CPU's voltage regulation module (VRM).
- Reduce the need for separate 4-pin and 8-pin PSU cables.
How Does the 4+4 Pin CPU Connector Work?
The connector carries 12-volt power directly from the PSU to the motherboard's CPU power socket. The motherboard's VRM then converts this voltage into the much lower, tightly regulated voltages required by the processor.
The cable can operate in two ways:
- Single 4-pin: Used with older or entry-level motherboards.
- Combined 8-pin (4+4): Used with most modern Intel and AMD motherboards.
The two halves lock together to form a standard 8-pin CPU connector.
Key Characteristics
- Dedicated CPU power cable
- Two detachable 4-pin sections
- Carries only 12V power
- Keyed connector prevents incorrect installation
- Usually labeled CPU, EPS12V, or ATX12V
- Included with nearly all modern ATX power supplies
Important Specifications
Specification | Details |
|---|---|
Connector Type | 4+4 Pin EPS/CPU |
Purpose | CPU power delivery |
Voltage | 12V |
Typical PSU Label | CPU, EPS, EPS12V, ATX12V |
Compatibility | 4-pin and 8-pin CPU sockets |
Standard | EPS12V |
Compatibility
The 4+4 Pin CPU Connector works with:
- Intel desktop motherboards
- AMD desktop motherboards
- Older motherboards with a 4-pin CPU power socket
- Modern boards using an 8-pin EPS connector
- Some high-end boards with additional 4-pin or 8-pin CPU power connectors
It does not replace additional CPU power connectors found on enthusiast motherboards designed for heavy overclocking.
Advantages
- One cable supports multiple motherboard generations.
- Easier PSU compatibility.
- Stable power delivery for modern CPUs.
- Reduces manufacturing complexity.
- Simple installation with keyed connectors.
Limitations
- Cannot substitute for PCIe GPU power cables.
- May be insufficient alone on motherboards requiring multiple CPU power connectors for extreme overclocking.
- Incorrect cable usage can prevent a system from booting.
4+4 Pin CPU Connector vs 8-Pin PCIe Connector
Feature | 4+4 Pin CPU Connector | 8-Pin PCIe Connector |
|---|---|---|
Purpose | Powers the CPU | Powers the graphics card |
Standard | EPS12V | PCI Express |
Connector Design | 4+4 detachable | 6+2 detachable |
Typical Label | CPU, EPS | PCIe, VGA, GPU |
Interchangeable | No | No |
Although both have eight pins, their wiring and keying differ and should never be swapped.
Common Misconceptions
- A 4+4 CPU connector is the same as an 8-pin GPU connector.
False. They use different electrical standards and are not interchangeable. - Every motherboard needs an 8-pin CPU connector.
Not always. Some older boards only require a 4-pin connector. - The 24-pin motherboard connector powers everything.
No. Modern processors require dedicated CPU power through the 4+4 pin connector.
Real-World Examples
- A gaming PC with an Intel Core i7 typically uses the connector in 8-pin mode.
- An older office PC motherboard may require only one 4-pin half.
- Modular power supplies usually provide one or more detachable 4+4 CPU cables for compatibility with different motherboards.
